There is some controversy in this country over the display of publically-sponsored nativity scenes.

In Europe, such displays are less controversial, but in much of southern Europe there is a tradition that, if followed here, would probably only add to the fuss.

Meet El Caganer.

This traditional figure has graced(?) nativity displays in Catalonia since the mid 1700s. It can also be found in other parts of southwestern Europe, including Murcia, the region just south of the Valencia in Spain (where they are called cagones), Naples (cacone or pastore che caca) and Portugal (cagões). Folklorist Joan Amades has called it an essential piece and the most popular figure of the nativity scene.
