Goodbye, Chiapas.

Back in the capital of the state of Chiapas, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, we had a day before our flight home, so we decided to visit the Chiapas regional museum.

The main exhibit was an in-depth history of the discovery and excavation of Bonampak. The best part of the display was a series of reproductions of the site's famous murals, which are hard to see in detail in the dark, roped -off viewing areas at Bonampak. Here, it was easy to see the strange faces of the various celestial beings depicted interacting with the human inhabitants of the city.

We used to have a tradition of making outlandish hats for people's birthdays. There were some memorable designs, but none came close to these beauties.

I especially like the scary rabbit.

And then there was this collectable souvenir from the movie "Alien," somehow displaced 1,500 years in time.

In another part of the museum, gaudy depictions of other deities mark the Spanish conquest.

The gods may change, but a great hat is still a great hat.

And now you know the Spanish word for urinal.

The Cathedral of San Marcos stands at the center of the city. It has 48 bells that toll on the hour to accompany an automated procession of the twelve apostles.

Unfortunately, we just missed the apostles, but we consoled ourselves with this excellent lion. Pereiras, are you interested?

Two days later, we were back in California, watching the sun setting over the Pacific from Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma. Our excellent Mexican adventure was over.

But we'll be back.

P.
