Chicken Soup Lake.

Some things here I don't think we would ever get used to. One is the attitude toward hygiene and the environment.

This woman was cleaning up after the lunch rush at her pho ga stand.
She dumped the unsold broth, noodles, and chicken bones right in the
gutter, then hosed her pots out on the sidewalk. Since almost every
inch of sidewalk in Hanoi is used for motorbike parking,
everyone winds up walking in the gutter instead.
Needless to say, you have to watch your step.

This little lake lies on one of the exits to the maze. We walk by it
just about every day and often remark how beautiful it must
have been 20-30 years ago. Not so much now. Just yesterday
morning, O. saw a woman dumping her huge pot of excess pho ga
into the lake, bones and all.
