When we saw the skies the next morning, we had a feeling of foreboding.
The forecast called for sunny skies and a high of 71, but we were skeptical by this time.
However, by around 8:00 the clouds had broken up and we decided to take a hike
up a old jeep track.
The flat light washed out even potentially colorful shots.
We encountered some cows who seemed rather dubious about our intentions.
They shouted some personal remarks and moved on.
We decided that going back the same way we came was boring, so we started searching
for another way back to the car. The hillsides look very smooth, but they are
made up of loose, often jagged rocks. You have to watch every step carefully.
As we were trying to find a slope that didn't end in a sharp drop-off,
the clouds closed in and the wind kicked up again. We started getting
a few drops of rain.
We finally found a way down. It was treacherous in places, and I almost fell once,
but eventually we made it back to the valley floor, only to face a long hike
back to our campsite. Once we got there, we took in the gray skies
and intense wind and decided that it was time to go home.
Next post: Taking the long way home.
