Today, September 2 is Independence Day here. On this date in 1945, Uncle Ho (that is what they call him here) and his followers finally managed to end the Japanese occupation and declare Vietnam a sovereign nation. Then, with the help of the U.S., the French decided to reclaim their colony, got their butts kicked, we Americans decided we had to save them from communism, and, well, you know how that turned out.
There is supposed to be a parade, patriotic concert, etc. at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (yep--he was embalmed by the same Russian experts who have maintained Lenin for all these years, and he lies there in state for all to see) which will be carried on all channels this evening.

yesterday I went to HCM mausoleum to see the flag pulling-off parade. It is organised everyday at 9pm and about 5 or 6am (for pulling up). As it was 02-09, it was incredibly crowded. It only lasts aroung 5-7 minutes. From Doi Can, you can catch bus 09, it passes Hoang Hoa Tham and stop at the 2nd bus stop on Ngoc Ha str to reach to HCM Mausoleum. i did so yesterday.
I have yet to ride the buses - they seem so confusing - you've made it sound less so.
:), as I am used to it, you will take it easy gradually, one remarkable thing is to know exactly the right side to take the bus :D. I was inexperienced without the map
