The B-52 Lake.

In one of the lakes hidden in the maze of alleys to the east and north of out house, we heard that there was a historical marker and the remains of a crashed B-52. O. saw it briefly from the back of a motorbike, but we couldn't find it again. Finally a fellow teacher said she lived nearby and was able to provide directions. Here it is.

I've seen pictures of this before and it seems so improbable. What happened? Did the plane crash in the lake? How did it not plow a row of destruction through the neighborhood?

Was it brought to the lake? What happened to the crew?

This is the remains of "Rose 1", a B-52D shot down over Hanoi on December 19, 1972. The aircraft landed in a lake in the Ba Dinh district, now named "B-52 Lake". Of the crew of six, four bailed out and became PoWs and the other two were killed in the crash. The buildings, of course, were constructed much later. I'm not sure if there were many houses around the lake at the time.
