So we were talking to the director of one of the schools where we've interviewed, and when we mentioned the Old Quarter Hotel, he was aghast and told us it was a dump. He recommended the Viet Anh Hotel. Cheaper and nicer, he said. So we de-booked and re-booked and then got an email saying that the hotel was closed for reservations and they had booked us at a sister hotel. Now this raised red flags because we've heard all kinds of bait and switch stories from other travelers, so I emailed them to be sure that they had free wi-fi because we gots to have our free wi-fi. No reply. Tried again, no reply. De-booked, emailed our contact: another recce, please! Because now we're getting desperate.
He replies that he was mistaken about the Old Quarter Hotel. It's actually pretty nice. He was thinking of another hotel with a similar name. But he still thinks it's overpriced, so he recommends the Heart Hotel. It looks nice, so we book and exchange lovely emails setting pickup from the airport for Friday night. Whew!
