Even by Hanoi standards, this building going up in front of our alley is narrow.
You can see the one next to it is extra wide by comparison.
One of the alleys in the maze surrounding our house leads to this
sad remnant of a stream that used to flow through the village of Ba Dinh.
Bun cha: marinated strips of pork, chargrilled, afloat in a bowl
of vinegar mixed with fish sauce and a little sugar.
Just add rice noodles, greens, herbs, bean sprouts, and chiles.
It's a hearty lunch (or dinner) for about 90 cents per person.
P. gets ready to tuck in.
A huge, beautiful park not far from our house. Today we saw at least
four weddings being photographed here.

You both look so happy, you must be loving it!
Talking about water...do they have water rationing? In Bombay people get water only during a couple of hours a day and they use the time to fill storage tanks.
What are you doing the recording for?
Love the pictures!
Eileen - we have plenty of water - no rationing of any kind.
Bisquiat - we have been recording the audio portion of an online English comprehension and certification test. So we get to say things such as:
What is the man doing in the picture?
(a) he is reading the newspaper
(b) he is shinning his shoes etc...
We not only get to record - we have also edited the test to make more sense e.g. cleaned up the syntax, used the correct tense, made sure the verb and subject agree, etc...
We thought we were only going to teach but this school approached us with this additional work - a nice change from straight classroom teaching.
perhaps it's botanical park. It's nice but I have never been there
why are the chairs so little? or does bun cha make peter a giant?
great stuff happening. thanks for the wonderful updates.
Emily - these tiny chairs are everywhere! All the eating stalls have them and even some of the restaurants. Whenever we go to eat we take bets if we'll have a normal sized chair...very seldom.
